Flood
Damaged Pianos
Chances are, if you are visiting this page, you have
a flood-damaged piano, or know someone who has one. Perhaps your piano
was recently lost to Hurricane Katrina. Whatever has happened to your
piano, please understand, water in the form of excess humidity or
actual flood water is the enemy of all acoustic pianos.
The Bad News About Flood Damaged Pianos
Flood-damaged pianos are usually not repairable. Grand
pianos that get flooded up to the legs and the lyre are repairable,
while upright pianos that suffer even just a few inches of flood water
are usually “totaled” by insurance companies. Flood waters
soak the critical wooden parts of the piano - namely the soundboard,
the ribs that support the soundboard, and the piano’s case -
which swell and then later contract causing warping, cracking and
separation. Further, if the flood waters are saltwater, the metal
parts drenched by the saltwater may not sustain any immediate damage,
but the strings, lyre rods, tuning pins and other metal parts will
corrode later often rendering the piano worthless.
The Good News: You Can Replace Your Flood Damaged Piano
After your insurance company claims agent or piano
technician has certified your piano as a total loss, your insurance
company will pay you your claim amount (provided you had flood insurance).
Often, this amount is based upon the replacement value of your piano
and is determined by fair market value for a piano its age. Some insurance
policies have an individual deductible amount for your piano, while
others have a deductible amount for all your covered property lost.
